Best Practices Every SQL Server DBA Must Know 
With the continued popularity of SQL Server, more and more people are becoming SQL Server DBAs, whether they planned to or not. Many of these DBAs don’t have formal training, but are doing the best they can under the circumstances. Most of these DBAs want to do a good job, but just don’t know where to start. While Books Online is a great reference tools, it doesn’t tell someone what they need to know about commonly established best practices that experienced DBAs know by heart.

The previous DBA left and your boss decided you should cover the position. But where do you start? Which questions should you ask? What should you do first?  You don't even know what it is you don't know. We'll discuss maintenance, disaster recovery, storage, performance, and monitoring. We'll touch on many other areas as well so you'll at least have heard a bit about them and you'll know to learn more and ask questions on them.

Keeping the business running- Backup & Restore
The Backup and Restore commands are the most important SQL Server commands in a Database Administrators arsenal.  But there is more to Backup & Restore than just recovery from a system failure or user error. This session will cover some of the features and option available for not just disaster recovery, but day to day operations.

DBA 101: Common best Practices (with discussion)
As soon as you get into the office in the morning, before you've even had your first coffee, you should be thinking about on your routine.  This session cover best practices for what DBAs need to do on a day-to-day basis. This is the kind of information you won't find in most books. It is the kind of information that can only be learned on the job.

The Community Tech Preview version of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now available.

As I mentioned in below, SP3 for SQL Server 2005 has "gone gold".  There is apparently also a CU1 for SP3 ready, but the KB page isn't resolving at present.

At the same time, CU11 for SP2 has been released.

Argh!.

SP3 is meant to be the combination of previously released hot fixes, like the CUs but with more rigorous testing.

They're just trying to confuse us.  Right?  Or is there more to SP3 than just the hotfixes?

If I need to build a new 2005 box, should I go with SP2+CU11 or SP3+CU1?
