With Marcus in NICU, I really wanted to be able to do something for him, since I couldn't pick him up or feed him or anything. The nurses had a variety of blankets and other covers they put over the babies' incubators to keep the light out, so I decided I'd make a quilt to go on Marcus' incubator. Dave and I were in visiting him one evening and I was talking about it, so Dave decided to measure the size of the blanket they were currently using. We didn't have any kind of measuring tape, so he used the book he was reading. The dimensions turned out to be something like 3 book heights wide by 5½ book heights long.
I made up the pattern myself - it is basically just a series of 3½" squares. I used alternating patterned and plain squares in bright colours. It looks a little bit "around the world"-ish, but is actually alternating diagonals. Everything for it, the squares, borders, batting and backing, came out of my stash, which was very satisfying.
Now that Marcus is home we have pinned it to the end of his cot to keep away any drafts coming in through the bedroom door.
